It is called dns registration or domain name registration i.e. to register “Something”.com to your host site. It cost money and most likely one have to call your ISP or domain name registrar ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_name… ) if they can help register it.
You can try following site for free registration from
from http://www.everydns.net , http://www.zoneedit.com or http://www.dyndns.org but with restriction.
“something”.com = impossible, have to buy to register.
“something”.dyndns.com or “something”.everydns.com or “something”.zonedit.com = get free by registering above. They also have some more free domain name ( other list like http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndn… ) like “something”.homeip.com or “something”.dyndns.org etc
for more info on dyndnshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DynDNS
PS:- using http://www.dyndns.com, I set up my own website/ftp site on my computer (having DSL + IP dynamic address) while having domain name of “something”.homeip.net by registering to free service section at http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndn…

You must know the actual IP address of where your hosting resides (should have your own)
Now…go into your MX records in your domain account control panel….put that ip address where the @ is.
Save
It may take a few minutes (hours, or days) depending on the domain server to propugate across the web

You will need to go to the Domain control using your account.
Wherever you got the free.com, you got to access it and go to domain to change the forwarding. Forward to any target web domain then save it.

The people who handles your domain name needs to point the NS to your web hosting IP.

I agree with aogpro. If you want an actual domain name you’re going to have to buy it from someone like GoDaddy. Then and only then can you point the DNS at your site. Otherwise the best you can do is a subdomain off of someone else’s site.
